The Czech Republic has a great number of curative water and gas springs. These mineral and thermal springs, therapeutic mud and peat, have given rise to the foundation and development of some 40 curative spas, which together with the beauty of the Czech and Moravian landscape, and the quality of spa care, have made the Czech Republic a great balneotherapy provider.

The Czech spas have hosted many famous visitors, such as Goethe and Beethoven, Smetana and Wagner, Maria Theresa and Peter the Great.

The most eminent of the Czech spas are those comprising the so-called West Bohemian spa triangle. The largest one - Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) is beautifully situated in the deep, wooded valley of the River Teplá. Mariánské Lázně features individual springs separated by spacious parks, while Františkovy Lázně, the smallest of the three, offers a quiet, intimate atmosphere.

There are the world-famous radioactive springs in Jáchymov in North Bohemia, and mud baths in the South Bohemian town of Třeboň. In Moravia, the most significant spas are Luhačovice and Jeseník, made famous by Vincent Priessnitz.

Karlovy Vary / Karlsbad

MEDICAL INDICATIONS: Carlsbad’s 12 springs are rich in sodium, bicarbonate and sulphates. Mineral-rich mud from a nearby source is also used in treatments. The water and mud are used to treat patients with digestive and musculoskeletal problems, diabetes and obesity.

Mariánské Lázně / Marienbad

MEDICAL INDICATIONS: The composition of the mineral springs in Marienbad is chemically very diverse. They are used to treat the patients with the diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract, the lymphatic system, the nerves, organic nerve diseases, diseases of the digestive tract and diabetes. Non-specific illnesses of the respiratory system, skin diseases and diseases of the locomotive apparatus are treated there as well.

Luhačovice

The springs are a natural medium mineralised curative water of the hydrogen-carbonate-sulphuric-lime-sodium type, with an increased level of fluoride, hypotonic with a slight content of radon and metasilicate acid. In all the spa houses, the springs are used for treatment of the locomotive apparatus, circulatory and nervous diseases.
